Brief historical background The preaching of the Gospel in Athens was done by the Apostle Paul in 52 AD. The same Apostle then preached in Corinth (cf. Acts 17: 15-18, 18). The founding of the Holy Archdiocese of the Catholics of Athens, as a Latin (Roman) standard Metropolis, dates back to 1205. During the Turkish occupation it had no Hierarch. After the founding of the new Greek State and the transfer of the Capital from Nafplio to Athens, it was re-established as an Archdiocese, immediately subject to the Holy See, on July 23, 1875. It includes Central Greece with Evia and Skyros, the Peloponnese, the islands of the Saronic Gulf, Kythira and Antikythira.Category: CHURCHES
